Elwood Curtis’ college dream crumbles along a two-lane highway in Florida. Bearing the brunt of an innocent misstep, he is condemned to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory sunk deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets another ward, Turner who has seen it all. Two black teenagers forge an alliance: Turner providing basic survival advice, Elwood clinging to his optimistic view of the world. Against the backdrop of the growing Civil Rights Movement, the existence of Elwood and Turner seems worlds away from Rev. An oratorio by Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood strives to retain his humanity, becoming a new vision for Turner.

While Cillian Murphy was discussing working with Tim Mielants again, Murphy’s wife suggested that the novel Small Things Like These be made into a film. He didn’t expect the rights to be available, but called Claire Keegan’s agent, who told him that they would be.
Damon liked the story, and the two set out to make the film
After acquiring the rights with producing partner Alan Moloney, Murphy pitched the idea to Matt Damon, who had set up a studio with Ben Affleck on the set of that film. Eileen Furlong: If You Want to Get Along in This Life, There Are Things You Have to Let Go.

The story is quite moving, intriguing, sad, melancholic and yet hopeful and overall it feels like Christmas
‘Small Things Like These’ is a film based on a novella of the same title by author Claire Keegan and actually follows the book closely, presenting the story with a straightforward plot and only a few flashbacks. The atmosphere is perfect, the cinematography is brilliant, even the camera lenses were just right to give the story the perfect setting.
Plus, the performances from everyone in the cast were brilliant, but Cillian Murphy is the right man for the right role in this one

During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, an American sports commentary team must adjust to live coverage of Israeli athletes held hostage by a terrorist group. 1972 is remembered for several key events. Swimmer Mark Spitz set seven world records en route to winning seven gold medals. Belarusian gymnast Olga Korbut won three gold medals (though not in the all-around). The United States and Russia played out one of the strangest and most controversial matches in Olympic history. Most importantly, the 1972 Munich Olympics are remembered for the tragedy of 10 members of the Israeli team taken hostage by a masked Palestinian militant group.
They were also the first Olympics in Germany since 1936 (Jesse Owens’ Games)
Writer-director Tim Fehlbaum and co-writers Moritz Binder and Alex David recreate the events from the perspective of an ABC production crew. For some historical perspective, these were the first Olympics to receive extensive, comprehensive live television coverage. They took place just 27 years after the end of World War II. A quick calculation suggests that 27 years after the release of this film was 1997, the year Princess Diana died. Simply put, the physical and emotional wounds had not fully healed, and Germany was trying to erase the past from memory. Famed ABC sports producer Roone Arledge (played by Peter Sarsgaard) is the man hosting the Olympics.
It’s no longer about swimming or sprinting, but now it’s ABC Sports vs
Newbie broadcast producer Geoffrey Mason (John Magaro, PAST LIVES, 2023) is hired to host the “off hours” while Arledge rests. Mason’s background includes minor league baseball, so this is his first shot at the big time. His boss, Marvin Bader (played by Ben Chaplin, THE THIN RED LINE, 1998) trusts his young protégé, but things quickly spiral out of control when gunfire rings out. The brilliance of the film comes from director Fehlbaum and cameraman Marcus Forderer (I ORIGINS, 2014) choosing to film everything in the ABC control room. This heightens the claustrophobia and pressure as the crew grapples with how best to handle this unfolding and clearly historic moment. ABC Sports.
Presenter Jim McKay is visible in archival footage, while reporter Peter Jennings is on the ground
ABC News… and since possession is the proverbial 9/10th of the law, Arledge fights to keep the story in the hands of his team, who are nearby. Translator Marianne Gebhardt (Leonie Benesch, who was amazing in THE TEACHER’S LOUNGE, 2023) is the only German speaker and is crucial to the coverage of what is being broadcast on local radio. It’s hard to convey how much tension runs through this film for both the TV crew and the audience. Ten members of the Israeli Olympic team have been taken hostage in the Olympic Village by the masked Palestinian militant group Black September. We know how the story played out in those hours and it is terrifying to revisit it from this perspective.
The haunting archive footage used here reinforces the quasi-documentary feel
Geopolitical aspects are touched upon (Bader was Jewish), but that is not the point. Journalism may be heavily criticized these days, but it’s historic moments like this when we rely on competent, trained professionals to tell (and show) the stories the world needs to know. The film will be released in select theaters on December 13,

Featured in Graham Norton i gosti: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024)
Fairytale of New YorkWritten by Jem Finer, Shane MacGowanPerformed by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl. This 6-part Netflix spy-thriller promised much but ultimately didn't quite fulfil all it might've.
The trio were working together but alone, seeking to expose some grand conspiracy
With a top cast including Keira Knightley as a ninja-kicking, gun-toting action heroine, ditto Ben Whishaw as her former mentor and now colleague, expectations were high. Both of them are operatives for the top-secret mercenary espionage organisation called Black Doves, whose controller is Sarah Lancashire, doing her best Judi Dench "M" impersonation in a dreadful platinum blonde wig.It certainly starts with a bang as we see three young people killed in Central London.
There's a separate plot strand which takes in the off-screen death of the Chinese ambassador to Britain, whose party-central daughter has also inconveniently disappeared, threatening all sorts of international political strife
It's no great surprise to see these two developments converging later on, both stories overlapping with Knightley and Whishaw's doings, not least because she, besides being married to the Government's Minister of Defence, himself caught up in the political fall-out over the ambassador's death, was herself also having a passionate affair with one of the three killed at the start.Various other characters are brought into the kaleidoscopic narrative, as Knightley and Whishaw get drawn deeper and deeper into an ever-more inscrutable plot while a body count builds up around and about them of mountainous proportions, occasionally at their hands, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance.Sharply directed with credible playing by its starry A-listers, for me, it somehow failed to deliver on its early promise, flying away on an overloaded plot which relied too much on coincidence, shoot-'em-up violence and quirky, offbeat characters.By the time it's all resolved at the end, I felt it had fallen somewhere between James Bond-type fantasy and Le Carre-type realism, with the escapism unfortunately winning out in the end. When I started viewing it I felt inclined, for almost the first time ever, to binge watch all the remaining episodes, it seemed that good, but by about episode 4, I'm afraid the cracks were showing, for which no amount of sharp dialogue and quick quips could compensate (and there were some good ones in there). It did pick up again for a tense and exciting finish even if it relied a lot on exposition and didn't seem to quite know when to stop. However it eventually did and even did so with a "Die Hard"-ish type Christmas-time tie-in but ultimately it all felt a bit too contrived, convoluted and confusing to really work for me..
