Fairytale of New YorkWritten by Jem Finer, Shane MacGowanPerformed by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl. This 6-part Netflix spy-thriller promised much but ultimately didn't quite fulfil all it might've.

The trio were working together but alone, seeking to expose some grand conspiracy

With a top cast including Keira Knightley as a ninja-kicking, gun-toting action heroine, ditto Ben Whishaw as her former mentor and now colleague, expectations were high. Both of them are operatives for the top-secret mercenary espionage organisation called Black Doves, whose controller is Sarah Lancashire, doing her best Judi Dench "M" impersonation in a dreadful platinum blonde wig.It certainly starts with a bang as we see three young people killed in Central London.

There's a separate plot strand which takes in the off-screen death of the Chinese ambassador to Britain, whose party-central daughter has also inconveniently disappeared, threatening all sorts of international political strife

It's no great surprise to see these two developments converging later on, both stories overlapping with Knightley and Whishaw's doings, not least because she, besides being married to the Government's Minister of Defence, himself caught up in the political fall-out over the ambassador's death, was herself also having a passionate affair with one of the three killed at the start.Various other characters are brought into the kaleidoscopic narrative, as Knightley and Whishaw get drawn deeper and deeper into an ever-more inscrutable plot while a body count builds up around and about them of mountainous proportions, occasionally at their hands, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance.Sharply directed with credible playing by its starry A-listers, for me, it somehow failed to deliver on its early promise, flying away on an overloaded plot which relied too much on coincidence, shoot-'em-up violence and quirky, offbeat characters.By the time it's all resolved at the end, I felt it had fallen somewhere between James Bond-type fantasy and Le Carre-type realism, with the escapism unfortunately winning out in the end.When I started viewing it I felt inclined, for almost the first time ever, to binge watch all the remaining episodes, it seemed that good, but by about episode 4, I'm afraid the cracks were showing, for which no amount of sharp dialogue and quick quips could compensate (and there were some good ones in there).It did pick up again for a tense and exciting finish even if it relied a lot on exposition and didn't seem to quite know when to stop. However it eventually did and even did so with a "Die Hard"-ish type Christmas-time tie-in but ultimately it all felt a bit too contrived, convoluted and confusing to really work for me..

So here it goes

The incident with Valya Harkonnen using voice is from one called 'Mentats of Dune'. All three books interweave the development of the Sisterhood, the Mentats, the Navigators and the Suk Doctors.. Referenced in AniMat's Crazy Cartoon Cast: The New Normal (2020). I wanted to be brief and to the point, but felt compelled to expand my thoughts.

The rest of the characters left me uninterested

There was a time when writers knew how to weave exposition into narrative without it feeling forced and contrived. I get that it’s a first episode, but do they have to spell everything out like they aren’t common knowledge. Watson(Valya), Mark Strong(Emperor), Travis Fimmel(Hart) and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (Princess) delivered good performances. I feel like the show is in good hands.

They move the story but are forgettable

I guess we’ll see how it evolves. I found it hard to stay focused on the first episode. It seemed to be part of a whole that can’t be divided. I will wait for the full season before consuming more episodes.

They did a marvelous job on the visuals

The CGI is high quality, the costumes are perfect, the tone from Villeneuve’s vision is maintained and expanded from. The art dept should get awards for how beautiful it looks.

A simple but loving story is what Goodrich delivers about a father who seeks the help of his adult daughter to raise his young twins after his second wife leaves him. The film works thanks to a pleasant script and enthusiastic direction that allows us to have Michael Keaton in one of his best performances where we can see the actor in all his splendor and with all his talent to take us from comedy to drama and vice versa in a gratifying and perfect way. A character full of humanity and sweetness, but with a soul really in need of affection that makes him an adorable character that hooks you throughout his journey.

Recommended for anyone looking for something light and full of pleasant messages, it is a movie that you will have a good time with and it will be worth it without any major expectations

It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it’s a routine film that has been seen many times, but it is endearing with funny moments and other emotional ones that make this tragicomedy a pleasant pastime to watch on a family weekend. It doesn’t propose new things and always plays it safe in the aspects it wants to explore in depth, but its entire cast gives it an additional plus, which allows you as a spectator to have a good time watching this adventure about fatherhood, maturity , forgiveness and love.
