John Crowley creates a simple and predictable love story that is nothing special but captures a beautiful presentation with two strong performances by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. With good music, simple dialogues and structure, it still maintains an emotional connection with its viewers as the chemistry and banter between the two actors is watchable and good.

Investigating judge Iman struggles with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran
When his gun goes missing, he suspects his wife and daughters, enacting draconian measures that strain family ties as societal norms crumble. Director Mohamed Rasulof was originally slated to participate in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the Un Certain Regard jury. . However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan over a deadly building collapse. On May 8, 2024, Rasuloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, as well as flogging, fines and confiscation of property. On May 12, 2024, Rasulof announced that he had managed to escape from Iran and was staying at an unknown location in Europe.
On May 24, 2024, Rasuloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes and held up two photos of the film’s actors, Soheil Golestani and Misa Zare, on the red carpet. Iman: Sana wants to have blue hair? Painted nails? Why? Najmeh: The world has changed. Iman: The world has changed, but God has not.

It strangles its host even as it strangles them to death. The criminal is not what you expect. Iman climbs the ladder in Iran’s judiciary. High-minded, ambitious and hardworking, he strives to earn the recognition of his superiors and is promoted. Where he accepts love in his workplace, country, wife and daughters, he finds rebellion. If Iman looks inside himself, he might find a way to fix things.
The Sacred Fig Seed won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival and is a success for its authenticity, depth, capable actors and gripping story. Director Mohammad Rasulof spent time in prison for the crime of practicing his art of filmmaking. Rasuloff took to the video at this Toronto International Film Festival screening to talk about one of his interrogators who felt ashamed of his actions and didn’t know which way to turn. He claimed he was getting grief from his family. This raw and disturbing film features actual footage from the violent 2022 uprising in Iran surrounding the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly wearing a hijab improperly. The film reminds us to look carefully at our workplace, country, friends, family and ourselves, so as not to become the master of any suffocating fig, no matter how holy they say.
