David Kaplan: Yes
Story
The discordant cousins reunite for a tour of Poland in memory of their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a new twist when the odd couple’s old conflicts resurface against the backdrop of their family history. When Benjy and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, this is where Jesse Eisenberg’s real ancestors settled in the diaspora.. Benjy Kaplan: We keep moving, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor will come and take the tickets, we’ll tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom. Benjy Kaplan: He reaches the tail of the train and starts moving toward the front, looking for those who are left.
Benjy Kaplan: Yes
David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we late? By the time he gets to the start, the train will be at the station, and we’ll be free to go home. David Kaplan: That’s so damn stupid. Tickets are probably twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: It’s a principle. We don’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. This is our country.

David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap. 12 Etudes, Op. 25, No. 3 in F Major Written by Frédéric Chopin Performed by Zvi Erez. I think the only reason I went to see this movie was because of Kieran Culkin. What can I say, I love The Heirs.
Both actors do a great job, especially Culkin
And I definitely got more than I bargained for. It’s clear that this movie is written from the heart, and Jesse Eisenberg’s script is certainly strong, with some great dialogue and constant different interpretations of the phrase “Real Pain.” Benjy and David have very compelling stories, and the other characters, while not three-dimensional, are given plenty of time to show themselves, especially James. As for directing, Jesse Eisenberg does a good job in his debut. The film is well-shot, and while there isn’t much variety, the film evokes a simple but realistic tone. Eisenberg tackles some strong themes and I think he does it well. I’m amazed at some of the things he could dream up on the spot, making some emotions hit even harder. But, of course, the strongest aspect of this film is the acting and the dynamic between Eisenberg and Culkin.
Check it out if you can
Benjy’s character is really compelling throughout the film as the audience keeps seeing the results of his grief and David’s reaction to them further strengthens their bond. Even though they are cousins in this movie, they really feel like brothers getting back together. Overall, I had a good time with this movie. I doubt it will blow anyone away, and there are no moments of extreme catharsis, but whatever he does, he does pretty well.
