A tense, creepy, melancholic, suffocating fantasy thriller with hints of a ghost story
Narrative
It follows a child named Emma on her journey to learn how to communicate with the spirit of a girl named Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermit cat for centuries, and so she tries to enlist Carol, a skeptical medium, to help her. A supernatural thriller full of terrifying action, suspense, chills and plenty of scares; Some of it is confusing and inexplicable, the reason for some of the spooky events is never well explained. The film depicts a fictional story about the social reality that plagues a small town. It begins with a seemingly historical prologue discussing the plague, the chapel where the sick were walled up, and the Beak Regiment, but it eventually becomes a theatrical event as part of the small town’s annual festival when the chapel is haunted.
Little Usoa is open for a short spell
It follows a child, Emma (Maia Zaitegi), on her journey to learn how to communicate with the spirit of Uxo, a girl trapped in a hermitage for centuries, and so she tries to convince Carol (Belén Rueda), a skeptical and fake medium, to help her. She literally carries the scars of a childhood when her perhaps truly average mother seemed more interested in the local godmother of a little girl than her own daughter. This is a valid and acceptable film with a number of not always sympathetic, deeply human and like-minded protagonists. This is a ghost film that has a disturbing horror and a dark atmosphere when menacing creatures appear.
A suspenseful, mysterious film full of suspense, tension, chills, red herrings, scary twists
Step by step, the mystery begins to unravel until a surprising conclusion that results in a sentimental, witty story with a serious, brooding undertone in the environment of “The Orphanage” or “Pan’s Labyrinth”, but with its own female focus. It is a gripping drama whose interest decreases as its tediously creepy elements accumulate. Although ¨Cerdita¨ focuses on pure horror in ¨La Ermita¨, many things confirm that Pereda is a key figure in the contemporary horror and fantasy genre. One of them is his entry into genre cinema in the first place: he bets on fantasy without hesitation and adds personal drama.
In fact, Belén Rueda is a Spanish horror heroine or “
As the footage progresses, he gets lost, which prevents us from talking about gems like ‘Cerdita' elements of Spanish horror, although he certainly does not make horror. It turns out to be an adequate and decent film, but not remarkable. Belén Rueda seems ordinary in her style, she is an expert in mystery and horror films such as: Julie’s Eyes, The Orphanage, No dormirás, Durante la tormenta, The Pact, Orbita 9 and The Body. Scream Queen”, fits well with Maia Zaitegova, who reminds me of a young Ana Torrent in Cria Cuervos or El Espiritu de la Colmena (The Beehive).
The film was professionally directed by Carlota Pereda, who is clearly a talented writer and filmmaker
It won the 2023: Sitges Film Festival: Official Feature Film Section (out of competition) and the 2023: Goya Awards (Spain): Nomination for Best Special Effects. His first film was the much better film ¨Cerdita¨, based on Carlota Pereda’s own Goya Award winner for Best Short Film of the same name, winner of the Goya Award for Best Short Film in 2018 and starring Laura Galán. Rating: 5.5/10.
